Jaffna Monitor Publications and Ghazal Publications have jointly brought out The Meccan Shawl, an English translation மக்கத்துச் சால்வை, the first collection of short stories by the veteran Sri Lankan Tamil writer from the Eastern Province, S. L. M. Hanifa, edited by the University of Michigan academic Pasmila Raviraj. The collection consists of fifteen stories: one translated years ago by Prof. S. Sivasegaram, some jointly translated by Pasmila Raviraj and me, and the rest translated by me. Prof. M. A. Nuhman kindly wrote the foreword.

If you want a glimpse of life in the eastern province or a taste of S. L. M. Hanifa‘s compelling descriptions thereof, give it a read.

Some of these translations have appeared in Jaffna Monitor which has republished the title story in its current issue.

Jaffna Monitor பதிப்பகமும் கஸல் பதிப்பகமும் ஒருங்கிணைந்து, இலங்கையின் தலை சிறந்த மூத்த தமிழ் எழுத்தாளர் எஸ். எல். எம். ஹனிபாவின் மக்கத்துச் சால்வை சிறுகதைத் தொகுப்பின் ஆங்கில மொழியாக்கமான The Meccan Shawl என்ற நூலை வெளியிட்டுள்ளார்கள். மிச்சிகன் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தைச் சேர்ந்த பஸ்மிலா ரவிராஜ் தொகுத்த இந்த நூலில் பதினைந்து கதைகள் உள்ளன. ஒன்று பேராசிரியர் சி. சிவசேகரம் பல வருடங்களுக்கு முன்னரே மொழியாக்கியது. சில பஸ்மிலா ரவிராஜ் உடன் நானும் சேர்ந்து மொழியாக்கியவை. மீதி நான் மொழியாக்கியவை. பேராசிரியர் எம். ஏ. நுஃமான் தயை கூர்ந்து ஒரு முன்னுரை எழுதியுள்ளார்.
