கணேஷானந்தன் 2024இல் ‘பெண் எழுத்தாளர்’ விருதும் (Women’s Prize for Fiction), ‘கரோல் ஷீல்ட்ஸ்’ விருதும் (Carol Shields Prize for Fiction) பெற்றவர்.

“Kaṭalōṭikaḷ,” a collection of Tamil translations of ten stories, originally published in English at various times by four internationally acclaimed authors of Sri Lankan origin — T. Tambimuttu, Alagu Subramaniam, V. V. Ganeshananthan, Vajra Chandrasekara — has been published by Karuppu Piradhigal.
The book can be ordered from the commonfolks.in online bookstore: https://www.commonfolks.in/books/d/kadalodigal-karuppu-pirathigal
An excerpt from my introduction to this collection:
In this collection, we have translated ten short stories by four writers of Sri Lankan origin who reached the pinnacles of the western literary world: T. Tambimuttu, Alagu Subramaniam, V. V. Ganeshananthan, and Vajra Chandrasekara. All four were born in the twentieth century. T. Tambimuttu and Alagu Subramaniam excelled during the 1950s and 60s. V. V. Ganeshananthan and Vajra Chandrasekera began their literary careers in the 2000s. The stories of the first two vividly illustrate a vanished Ceylon of our parents’ and grandparents’ generations. V. V. Ganeshananthan’s stories depict the horrors of the civil war. Vajra Chandrasekera’s stories belong to the genre of “climate fiction,” portraying a dystopian future devastated by climate catastrophes.
The two writers representing the younger generation have received numerous prestigious literary awards. V. V. Ganeshananthan received the Women’s Prize for Fiction and the Carol Shields Prize for Fiction in 2024. Vajra Chandrasekera has received several awards for science fiction, including the Nebula Award for Best Novel.
The writers representing the earlier generation moved shoulder to shoulder with the finest English literary figures of their time. Tambimuttu’s short story “The Pomegranate Tree” appeared in The New Yorker, the leading literary magazine. He founded and ran a literary magazine called Poetry London, through which he introduced many celebrated English poets. Alagu Subramaniam was a prominent member of the ‘Bloomsbury Literary Circle’ in London. He founded a literary journal called Indian Writing, in which figures such as Tagore and Nehru published their works.
Having secured translation rights from the writers themselves or from their families, it is our great privilege to bring these stories to Tamil readers.
My heartfelt thanks to Anuja Prakash who co-created this collection with me, Jeevamani Balan who designed the book, Prof. Suresh Canagarajah, who graciously agreed to write a thoughtful introduction, and Shobasakthi who encouraged us to undertake this journey and painstakingly edited our first draft. I am indebted to Shakuntala Tambimuttu, Premila Thurairatnam, V. V. Ganeshananthan, and Vajra Chandrasekara for granting us translation rights.
Thanks also to the magazines that previously published individual stories that appear in this collection: Kalachuvadu, Virakesari Weekend Edition, Thadari, Uyirmai, Amrutha, Andhimazhai, and Vallinam.
Please share with those interested in reading the translated work of these celebrated writers. Thanks!
