In their August issue, Amrutha has published my Tamil translation of the next “lost Tambimuttu” story, ‘The Tree Climber.’ Thanks again to Shakuntala Tambimuttu for making a copy of the original available (reproduced below) which appeared in the now defunct The Reporter on September 22, 1955. The story is set in Tambimuttu’s native Atchuvely roughly a century ago. It tells the story of the tree climber, Velu, who is part of Tambimuttu’s grandfather’s household. In his typical style, Tambimuttu blends a riveting story with vivid descriptions of the local flora.

அம்ருதா ஆகஸ்ட் இதழில், The Tree Climber’ என்கிற இன்னுமொரு ‘தொலைந்த தம்பிமுத்து கதை’ யின் எனது தமிழாக்கம் வெளியாகியுள்ளது. ரிப்போர்ட்டர் என்ற இலக்கியச் சஞ்சிகையில் 1955 செப்டெம்பர் 22 அன்று வெளியான கதையின் மூலப்பிரதியை (கீழே பார்க்கவும்) தந்துதவிய சகுந்தலா தம்பிமுத்துவுக்கு நன்றிகள்! தம்பிமுத்துவின் சொந்த ஊரான அச்சுவேலியைப் பின்னணியாகக் கொண்ட இந்தக் கதை வேலு என்ற மரமேறியைப் பற்றியது. தம்பிமுத்து வழமை போல ஒரு சுவாரசியமான கதையை இயற்கைவளத்தின் வர்ணனையோடு கலந்து மெருகூட்டியுள்ளார்.
