Jaffna Monitor has just published Lines and Patterns, my translation of கோடுகளும் கோலங்களும், the first short story collection by the veteran Sri Lankan Tamil writer, the late Kuppilan ai. Shanmugan. Postscript: Doing this translation was not just a literary undertaking for me, but was also a source of deep personal joy. Shanmugan was my father’s cousin. When I was eight, he and his friend Jesurasa visited us. I showed them a ‘poem’ I had written. Instead of dismissing it as the child’s play that it was, they provided a thoughtful, constructive critique with a pat on my back. What more could an eight-year-old boy, with dreams of becoming a writer one day, ask for!

மறைந்த மூத்த இலங்கைத் தமிழ் எழுத்தாளர் குப்பிழான் ஐ. சண்முகனின் முதலாவது சிறுகதைத் தொகுப்பு ‘கோடுகளும் கோலங்களும்,’ எனது ஆங்கில மொழியாக்கமாக Lines and Patterns என்ற தலைப்பில் வெளியிடப்பட்டுள்ளது (அமெசான் லிங்குகள் மேலே). தமிழ் மூலம் 1976ஆம் ஆண்டு அ. யேசுராசா அவர்களின் அலை பதிப்பகத்தால் வெளியிடப்பட்டது. இந்த நூலின் பொன்விழாத் தருணத்தில் அதன் ஆங்கில மொழியாக்கத்தை வெளியிட முடிந்ததில் மிகுந்த மகிழ்ச்சி அடைகிறேன். மொழியாக்க உரிமையைத் தந்த புனிதவதி சண்முகலிங்கம் அவர்களுக்கு எனது மனமார்ந்த நன்றிகள்.

பிற்குறிப்பு: இந்த மொழியாக்கம் இலக்கியப்பணி என்று மட்டுமல்லாது தனிப்பட்ட வகையிலும் உவகை தரும் வேலையாகவே எனக்கு இருந்தது. சண்முகன் அவர்கள் எனது தந்தையின் மைத்துனர். நான் எட்டு வயதாக இருந்த போது அவரும் அவரது நண்பர் யேசுராசாவும் எங்கள் வீட்டுக்கு வருகை தந்தபோது நான் எழுதிய ஒரு ‘கவிதை’யை அவர்களிடம் காட்டினேன். து ஒரு சிறுபிள்ளைத்தனமான ஆக்கம் என்றும் என்பதைக் கண்டு கொள்ளாமல் அவர்கள் அதை ஆழமாக ஆக்கபூர்வமாக விமர்சித்து முதுகில் தட்டி ஊக்குவித்துச் சென்றனர். தான் ஒரு எழுத்தாளனாக வரவேண்டும் என்று கனவுகண்ட எட்டு வயதுப் பையனுக்கு அதைத்தவிர வேறு என்ன வேண்டும்!
