Following the first “lost” Tambimuttu story that Anuja Prakash and I translated last month, here is a new one: Elizam. Thanks to Shakuntala Tambimuttu for granting us permission to bring this lost story to light. The English original, which was published in the now defunct The Reporter, appears below. This is a wonderful creative non-fiction story of childhood in Eastern Sri Lanka in the early 20th century and the poignant relationship between household help and the host family.

சென்ற மாதம் அனுஜா பிரகாஷும் நானும் ஒரு “தொலைந்த” தம்பிமுத்து கதையைத் தமிழாக்கியதை அடுத்து இன்னுமொன்று: எலிஸம். ரிப்போர்ட்டர் என்ற இலக்கியச் சஞ்சிகையில் வெளியான ஆங்கில மூலம் கீழே உள்ளது (நன்றி: சகுந்தலா தம்பிமுத்து). கிழக்கிலங்கையில் போன நூற்றாண்டில் நடந்த சிறுபராய நினைவுகளைப் பற்றிய அபுனைவுக் கதை, வீட்டில் உள்ளவர்களுக்கும் வீட்டில் வேலைக்கு வைத்திருந்த இளம்பெண்களுக்கும் இடையான வாஞ்சைமிகுந்த உறவைத் தத்ரூபமாகச் சித்தரிக்கும் கதை.
