Jaffna Monitor has just published, Pempalā, my translation of K. Mohammad Riyas‘s Tamil short story ‘பெம்பலா‘.

When Riyas told me about this story at a cafe in Singapore earlier this year, his description of the last scene left me stunned. It is a story of identity and its loss. It is the story of every refugee, repelled by both the land where they belonged and the land that gave them refuge, but could never quite fit them in. It is the story of an identity in limbo. As a refugee myself, I could not but help identify with this story, especially because the people who pushed Pempalā away are my own people, one more example of the tragic cycle where the victims of ethnic hatred turn around and inflict the same on others.

When Riyas sent me the original Tamil version, I saw that the ending that shook me so dramatically was actually missing from it. He wrote me a new one to translate. This is the ending you see in this version. It is not quite the same as the one that beguiled me, but it is equally compelling.

கே. முகம்மது றியாஸின் ‘பெம்பலா’ என்ற சிறுகதையின் எனது ஆங்கில மொழியாக்கத்தை Jaffna Monitor வெளியிட்டுள்ளது.

றியாஸ் எனக்குத் தமிழ் மூலத்தை அனுப்பியபோது அதிலே என்னை ஆட்டிப்போட்ட இந்த முடிவு இருக்கவில்லை என்பதைக் கண்டேன். றியாஸ் புதிதாக ஒரு முடிவை எழுதித்தந்தார். அதன் மொழியாக்கத்தைத்தான் இங்கே காண்கிறீர்கள். இது முந்தியதைவிட வித்தியாசமான ஆனால் அதேயளவு சிறந்த முடிவு.
