T. Tambimuttu (“Tambi”) was a poet and writer born in Sri Lanka in 1915 to an affluent catholic family hailing from the Northern village of Atchuvely. The Tamil literary magazine Thadari has just published மாதுளை மரம் my translation of his short story The pomegranate tree (New Yorker, November 1954).

Tambi traveled to England at 22 and set up a poetry magazine called Poetry London. He was so successful in the London literary scene that the list of poets he published in his magazine reads like a who-is-who of modern English literature, consisting of names like W. H. Auden, T. S. Eliot, Lawrence Durrell, Dylan Thomas. He moved to New York in 1952. In 1954, he published a short story called The pomegranate tree in New Yorker. He may be the first Sri Lankan (and perhaps the only one so far; Update: but see “Postscript” below) to have been published in New Yorker. His time in the US involved associations with influential personalities like Timothy Leary and Allen Ginsberg, Tambi moved back to England in the 1970s, launched yet another poetry magazine, and passed away in 1983.

Ironically, the New York Times saw it fit to title his obituary, “Tambimuttu, 67, Dies; Indian Poet and Editor”!

து. தம்பிமுத்து (தம்பி) என்கிற கவிஞர்/எழுத்தாளர் வட இலங்கையின் அச்சுவேலியைப் பூர்வீகமாகக் கொண்ட ஒரு செல்வந்தக் கத்தோலிக்கக் குடும்பத்துக்கு 1915இல் பிறந்தவர். அவரது The pomegranate tree கதையின் (நியூ யோர்க்கர், நவம்பர் 1954) எனது தமிழாக்கமான மாதுளை மரம், தடாரி மின்சஞ்சிகையால் வெளியிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.

தம்பி 22 வயதில் இங்கிலாந்து சென்று Poetry London என்ற ஒரு கவிதைச் சஞ்சிகையை நிறுவினார். வெற்றிகரமான இந்தச் சஞ்சிகையில் அவர் வெளியிட்ட கவிஞர்களுள் நவீன ஆங்கில இலக்கியத்தின் பெரிய ஆளுமைகளான டபிள்யூ. எச். ஆதன், டி. எஸ். எலியட், லாரன்ஸ் டரெல், டிலன் தோமஸ் போன்றோர் அடங்குவர். 1952இல் தம்பி நியூ யோர்க்குக்கு இடம் பெயர்ந்தார். 1954இல் நியூ யோர்க்கர் இலக்கியச் சஞ்சிகை அவரது The pomegranate tree என்ற சிறுகதையைப் பிரசுரித்தது. நியூ யோர்க்கரில் பிரசுரித்த முதல் (சிலவேளை, இதுவரை, ஒரேயொரு — ஆனால் கீழேயுள்ள பிற்குறிப்பைப் பார்க்க) இலங்கையர் இவரே . அமெரிக்காவில் வசித்த காலத்தில் தம்பியின் சகாக்களுக்குள் திமொதி லியரி, அலென் கின்ஸ்பெர்க் போன்ற அமெரிக்க எழுத்தாளர்களும் கலாசார முன்னோடிகளுமாகப் பலர் இருந்தனர். எழுபதுகளில் அவர் மீண்டும் இங்கிலாந்துக்கு இடம் பெயரிந்து அங்கே இன்னுமொரு கவிதைச் சஞ்சிகை ஆரம்பித்தார். 1983இல் இங்கிலாந்தில் காலமானார்.

அவரது மறைவுக்குப் பிறகு பிரசுரிக்கப்பட்ட இரங்கற் செய்தியில் நியூ யோர்க் டைம்ஸ் பத்திரிகை “இந்தியக் கவிஞரும் பத்திரிகாசிரியருமான தம்பிமுத்து” என்று விசித்திரமாகக் குறிப்பிட்டது.
