Earlier this year, the veteran writer Mr. A. Muttulingam introduced me to T. Tambimuttu, from the first generation of writers of Sri Lankan origin who achieved great success in the western literary world. Encouraged by the well-known writer Shobasakthi, I published the first ever (authorized) Tamil translation of a short story by T. Tambimuttu. Tambimuttu’s daughter Shakuntala, who granted me translation rights, then gave me access to more Tambimuttu stories from her archive. Many of them were published in the now defunct ‘The Reporter’ magazine and, as far as I can tell, no longer easily available. Anuja Prakash and I have been translating these “lost” stories. The Tamil literary magazine kālaccuvadu has just published the first one, பூட்டனாரும் பேய்பூதங்களும் (The original English version, “Great-grandfather and the Devil” appears below). It is a delectable story of childhood wonder at the magical world of ghosts and devils in the villages of Jaffna from a century ago. In characteristic Tambimuttu style, it also vividly captures life in a grand house in rural Atchuvely.

சில மாதங்களுக்கு முன்னர் மூத்த எழுத்தாளர் அ. முத்துலிங்கம் அவர்கள் து. தம்பிமுத்துவை எனக்கு அறிமுகம் செய்து வைத்தார். இவர் இலங்கையைப் பூர்வீகமாகக் கொண்ட, மேற்கத்தைய இலக்கிய உலகில் கொடிகட்டிப் பறந்த முதலாவது தலைமுறை எழுத்தாளர்களில் ஒருவர். பிரபல எழுத்தாளர் ஷோபாசக்தியின் ஊக்குவிப்புடன் தம்பிமுத்துவின் முதலாவது சிறுகதைத் தமிழாக்கத்தைச் செய்தேன். தமிழாக்க உரிமையை எனக்குத் தந்த தம்பிமுத்துவின் மகள் சகுந்தலா, தனது பேணகத்திலிருந்த இன்னும் சில சிறுகதைகளை எனக்குத் தந்தார். இவை அரை நூற்றாண்டுக்கு முன்னரே நின்று போய்விட்ட ‘The Reporter’ என்ற சஞ்சிகையில் வெளிவந்தவை. எனக்குத் தெரிந்தவரை அவற்றை இலகுவாக வேறெங்கும் பெறக் கூடியதாக இருக்கவில்லை. அனுஜா பிரகாஷும் நானும் இந்தத் “தொலைந்த” கதைகளைத் தமிழாக்கி வருகிறோம். அவற்றில் முதலாவது இந்த மாதக் காலச்சுவடு இதழில் வெளிவந்துள்ள பூட்டனாரும் பேய்பூதங்களும் என்ற கதை (அதன் ஆங்கில மூலம், “Great-grandfather and the Devil” கீழே உள்ளது). ஒரு நூற்றாண்டுக்கு முதல் யாழ்ப்பாணக் கிராமங்களில் நிலவி வந்த பேய்பூதங்களின் மாய உலகைப் பார்த்து வியந்த குழந்தைப் பருவக் கதை. வழக்கமான தம்பிமுத்து பாணியில் அச்சுவேலிக் கிராமத்தின் பெரிய வீடொன்றில் வாழ்க்கையைத் தத்ரூபமாக வர்ணிக்கிறது.
