I am also interested in translating stories into Tamil. As an amateur translator, I have limited myself to authors and themes that I have some insights into because those themes have been an integral part of my life: the Finnish way of life, and Science Fiction.

I was extremely gratified that my first attempt at translating a science fiction story into Tamil was just published in Kalachuvadu, a leading Tamil literary magazine. It is a powerful story by the Sri Lankan science fiction writer, and Nebula Award winner, Vajra Chandrasekara: “The Translator, at Low Tide” (finalist for the 2021 Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award).

What I would really love to do next is to translate Tove Jansson’s Moomin stories into Tamil. A couple of summers ago, I dabbled with this and wrote up my experience. One of the biggest (but delightful) challenges is choosing names for characters in the story that, I hope, captures the intent of the author. To do this, one must have some sort of understanding of Swedish, in addition to knowing something about the Finnish way of life. This is what gives me some confidence that I am able to translate Moomin stories at least as well as any professional translator without such insights can.

Last summer, I started translating one of the first books in the series: “Trollkarlens hatt” (“Taikurin hattu” in Finnish, “Finn Family Moomintroll, in English) The challenge is that rights to Tove Jansson’s works are protected. Before I can make my translation available, I need to obtain translation rights from the rights holder. For this, I need a Tamil publisher interested in publishing the book.

If you are or know a Tamil publisher interested in publishing Tove Jansson stories in Tamil, please let me know. If you are a Finn, and know how I might go about requesting those rights (other than by sending a cold e-mail to the address on that page), I would appreciate your insights, too.

சிறந்த வேற்று மொழி இலக்கியப் படைப்புகளைத் தமிழாக்குவதிலும் மிக ஆர்வம் கொண்டுள்ளேன். நான் ஒரு தொழிற்பண்பான மொழிபெயர்ப்பாளர் அல்லவென்பதால் எனக்கு ஒரு ஆழ்ந்த விளக்கமுள்ள கருப்பொருள்கள் உள்ள கதைகளை மட்டுமே மொழியாக்க முயல்கிறேன் — பின்லாந்திய வாழ்க்கை முறை பற்றிய, மற்றும் விஞ்ஞானக் கதைகள்.

எனது முதலாவது விஞ்ஞானக்கதையின் தமிழாக்கம் காலச்சுவடு இதழில் இந்த மாதம் வெளியிடப்பட்டது. அது நெபுலா விருதை வென்ற இலங்கை எழுத்தாளர் வஜ்ர சந்திரசேகரவின் கதை.

அடுத்ததாக நான் மிக உற்சாகத்தோடு செய்ய விரும்புவது பின்லாந்தைய எழுத்தாளர் தூவெ யான்சனின் மூமிக்கதைகளைத் தமிழாக்குவதுதான். அவர் ஒரு பேர்போன எழுத்தாளர். அவரது கதைகள் நாற்பதுக்கு மேலான மொழிகளுக்குப் பெயர்க்கப் பட்டுள்ளன. ஆனால் இன்னும் தமிழில் இல்லை. ஓரிரு வருடங்களுக்கு முன்னர் அவரது படக்கதை ஒன்றை தமிழாக்கிய அனுபவத்தைப் பற்றி எழுதினேன். இந்தத் தமிழாக்கத்தின் கடினமான (ஆனால் சுவையான) அம்சங்களில் ஒன்று கதாபாத்திரங்களின் பெயர்களைத் தமிழாக்குவதுதான். யான்சனின் நோக்கத்தைப் பிரதிபலிக்கும் வகையில் அவற்றை மொழியாக்கம் செய்வதற்குக் கொஞ்சம் சுவீட மொழி அறிவும் பின்லாந்தைய வாழ்க்கை முறை பற்றிய புரிதலும் அவசியம். அதனால் தான் இந்தக் கதைகளை மொழிபெயர்க்கும் தகுதி எனக்கு இருக்கிறது என்ற துணிச்சல் வந்திருக்கிறது!

கடந்த கோடை விடுமுறையில் அவரது ஆரம்பகால நாவல்களில் ஒன்றான “Trollkarlens hatt” (பின்னக மொழியில் “Taikurin hattu”, ஆங்கிலத்தில் “Finn Family Moomintroll) என்பதை தமிழாக்க ஆரம்பித்தேன். ஆனால் பெரிய சவால் என்னவென்றால் இந்தத் தமிழாக்கங்களைப் பகிர முதல் மொழியாக்க உரிமையைக் கோரிப் பெற வேண்டும். அதற்கு இந்தப் புத்தகங்ககளை வெளியிடத் தயாரான ஒரு தமிழ் மொழிப் பதிப்பகத்தைக் கண்டுபிடிக்க வேண்டும்!
