As a side note, I thought long and hard about how to translate the title. Kafka’s original story is titled “The Trial” in English but “விசாரணை” in Tamil. The original German title is “Der Prozess” which has a somewhat broader meaning than “The Trial” (it can also mean the judicial process related to a legal case). Whoever translated it into Tamil chose to use the word “விசாரணை” which has a decidedly broader meaning than “Der Prozess” or “The Trial”! It can refer to any type of investigation or even interrogation. A “trial” would be a more like “நீதிமன்ற விசாரணை” or “(நீதிமன்ற) வழக்கு.”

Shoba Sakthi‘s title for this story is a wordplay on the Tamil title of Kafka’s story. This story is about a (judicial) investigation but not an actual trial. But Shoba Sakthi‘s wordplay works because the same Tamil word means both “investigation” and “trial”. In the end, I decided to abandon the wordplay so that the English title accurately describes the proceedings in the story.

இந்தக்கதையின் தலைப்பைத் தமிழாக்குவதில் கொஞ்சம் தவித்துப் போனேன். காப்காவின் மூலக்கதையின் தலைப்பு “Der Prozess“”. அது நீதிமன்ற வழக்கை அல்லது வழக்கு சம்பந்தமான விசாரணைகளைக் குறிப்பிடக் கூடியது. ஆங்கில மொழியாக்கத்தின் தலைப்பு “The Trial”. அது நீதிமன்ற வழக்குகளை மட்டுமே குறிப்பிடக் கூடியது. ஆனால் தமிழாக்கம் செய்தவர் “விசாரணை” என்ற சொல்லைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்தார். ஷோபாசக்தி தன் கதைக்குத் தலைப்புப் போடும்போது காப்காவின் தலைப்போடு ஒரு சொல் விளையாட்டு போட்டார். ஆனால் இந்தக் கதையில் ஒரு விசாரணை மட்டுமே உள்ளது, நீதிமன்ற வழக்கேதும் கிடையாது. இறுதியில் நான் அந்த சொல்விளையாட்டைக் கைவிட்டுவிட்டுக் கதைக்குத் தகுந்ததாக “investigation” என்ற சொல்லை உபயோகித்தேன்.
